Many students living away from home for the first time, the big question is 'What should I take to university?' We here is a useful guide telling you the main things you need at uni.

1 Basic stationery for students

Many students are so excited about the prospect of going to univeristy that they completely lose sight of the fact that the primary aim is to study for a degree. Therefore you will needs the basics such as pads of paper, pens and pencils, A4 folders, scissors, stapler, erasers, note books, hole punch etc.

2 Basics food requirements (for self-catered students)

If your halls are self catered, you'll need to take basic food items such as tea, coffee, sugar, bread, milk, cereal, butter etc. You'll only need these basics to begin with until you find the nearest supermarket to stock up. If you are in a catered hall, you may not need all the items listed, but you will need some of them as even catered halls usually have small kitchens where you can prepare drinks and light meals.

3 Bathroom basics

You'll need to take all the things you usually use in the bathroom such as soap, tooth brush, tooth paste, shaving gear, toiletries, bath towels, hand towels etc.

4 Bedroom basics

You'll also need to take bedroom essentials such a dressing gown, duvet and bedding, coat hangers, slippers etc.

5 Basic kitchen essentials for students

If you are in a self catered hall, you will need to take kitchen essentials such as cutlery, plates, a kettle, toaster, mugs, drinking glasses, tin opener, corkscrew, washing-up liquid, tea towel, washing powder, scissors etc. If you are in a catered hall, you may not need all the items listed, but you may need some as your hall may have a small kitchen where you can prepare drinks and light meals.

6 Important documents

There are a few important documents that you will need to take such as your ID, letters from the university confirming your place on your course, your passport, your bank details and cards, NHS card, passport photos for uni registration and signing up for university clubs and societies etc, driving licence, student loan company documents etc. It's a good idea to keep all this information in a file so you know where it is when you need it.

7 Clothes for students

Of course you will need to take your clothes and your shoes.

8 Sports gear, musical instruments

If you intend to join a uni sports club or musical society, don't forget to take the equipment you need.

9 Things to brighen up your room

Your room will be your home - so you will need to take things to make it feel like home. For example, you may like to take your favouraite items such as photos, posters, a lamp, music equipment, a portable TV (but don't forget you need a licence).

10 Electical equipment

Laptops, ipods, digital cameras, webcams etc. But make sure everything is insured.

11 Mobile phone

Mobile phone to keep in touch with your family and friends.

12 Miscelleaneous things to take to university

Here is a list of things you need to take to uni:

* Alarm Clock

* Calculator

* Extension leads
* Hair Dryer
* Hair Straighteners/Curling Tongs
* Iron
* USB stick
* Paracetamol
* Hot water bottle
